Natural Facial Skincare Routine

Lately, I've been getting quite a few questions about how to properly care for one's delicate facial tissue. Krug's Eco-Logic provides natural facial products formulated very carefully to perform specific functions for your glowing complexion!

Step One: Exfoliate.

This can be done with either a mask or a facial scrub. This will help to remove any dead skin cells and give your face a fresh, healthy, glowing look.

Step Two: Cleanse with a natural facial soap.

This little guy loves bath time! While it's lots of fun for him, trying to care for his ultra-sensitive skin can be tricky for mama. This time of year is especially difficult...trying to keep a carefree toddler from getting dirty, sandy or sweaty is virtually impossible (and let's face it, more mess=more fun!). So, instead of fighting the nature of the two-year old, I have found a few ways to minimize the blotches, bumps and other sensitive skin issues that tend to pop up when the weather is warm, while keeping his skin clean and nurtured.

Before I discuss our bath time routine, I want to back up and mention clothing. Using a laundry detergent that is free of any dyes and perfumes is one way to eliminate skin irritants. Also, natural breathable fabrics are a must (organic cotton is a good choice in the summer), and when washing an item for the first time, and extra rinse cycle can be helpful as well.

When it comes to bath time, warm (not hot) water is the way to go. Luckily, my little guy likes his bathwater on the cooler side. Bubbles are fun, but most commercial products, even if they are marked 'gentle', tend to be irritating to his sensitive skin. So, instead of using baby wash, I grab a bar of unscented soap and a washcloth and let the bubbles fly. Krug's Eco-Logic unscented soap has a fabulous lather and is extra gentle. Like most toddlers, my son is very independent, so I give him a small piece of soap so that he can 'help' during bath time. (side note...these soaps are big enough to cut into 3 smaller bars, so you'll always have some when you need it)

After convincing him to get out of the tub, which is not an easy task, I gently pat his skin dry and apply a moisturizing unscented lotion. Sometimes his skin needs some extra attention, so I smooth on a small amount of all natural body chocolate, which is guaranteed to get a 'yum' every time you use it. Since potty training is still 'in progress', I also make sure to use baby bum balm throughout the day in order to keep his diaper area problem free.

This is me...

Well, it's not really me, but this little guy represents the best part of me...this is my youngest son, who will be turning 3 at the end of this summer. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Kathy. I have had the pleasure of working for Krug's Eco-Logic for about a year now. Perhaps you have seen my name scrawled on your invoices (please excuse my handwriting). Until recently, I was working 'behind the scenes'...wrapping soaps, labeling various products and packaging orders. As circumstances change, so have my duties with Eco-Logic, and you will be seeing more of me online (via blog posts, tweets, etc).

I can honestly say that my time with Krug's Eco-Logic has been one of the most rewarding, fulfilling 'jobs' (it's so much more than that...to call it a job just doesn't seem right) that I have had thus far. To work for someone who is so passionate about creating such wonderful natural, handmade products, while at the same time, making every effort to be as environmentally friendly as possible, and treating customers with so much kindness and respect, is truly inspiring. As I watch this company growing and changing, I am so thankful to have this opportunity, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Eco-Logic.

So, a little bit about me...hmm. Well, I am a former preschool teacher turned stay at home mom to two wonderful little boys. My oldest will be 7 in a few weeks, and his brother will be 3 before the summer is through. Oh my, how time has flown since I have become a mother. I'm sure some of you can relate. Like the little guy above, I love water. My parents dubbed me a 'water baby' at a very early age (perhaps my love of water has something to do with me being an Aquarian). In particular, I love the ocean...just watching and hearing the waves crash upon the shore, in my book, is one of the greatest joys in life. The ocean has a way of making me feel more centered, more peaceful, and calm. The more I think about it, water in general has this effect on me. A simple shower (something you take for granted until you have young children in the house) with my favorite soap, can be just what the doctor ordered when I'm feeling stressed.

After a long cold winter, the dog days of summer have finally arrived! So many things make me think of summer...lightning bugs, sweet corn, fireworks, trips to the beach, and of course, weddings! I'm sure many of you have been to, or will be attending a wedding this summer. Perhaps you are a bridesmaid, trying to plan a bridal shower for someone special. Quick DIY Scrub

Need a quick sugar scrub? It's a great way to exfoliate and give your skin a youthful appearance, glow, and super-touchably soft skin!

This is so easy - no measuring required!

Pour some sugar in a bowl - however much you'd feel you'd use in the shower or tub. Next, grab your olive oil on your counter. Yes, olive oil! It's one of the BEST moisturizers. Pour some into the sugar, stirring occasionally until all of the sugar is coated. No need to over-saturate the sugar, here ... just coat it. If you want a specific scent - you can find essential oils at your local grocer (peppermint is cool and refreshing, and rosemary gives you that herbal kick). Just two or three drops will do in your mixture.

Squeezing some lemon juice into your mix is another great way to get a fresh scent in your scrub. Want a little extra pampering? Add some honey (or for, to keep it vegan, agave nectar). This will help draw moisture to your skin. Mix everything together! That's it! To use - scrub over your skin in circular motions ... paying close attention to super dry areas (heals, elbows, knees, and feet).

Please use caution with these mixtures as it will create a slippery surface in the bathing area.

Hills.

I'm slowly getting back into running. The business + kids have been keeping me so incredibly busy ... usually the only time I have to run is before everyone wakes up - around 5 am. Today, I carved out an hour to do some hills. This of course means I'll be up later working tonight, but it was totally worth it.

Thanks to being coached in college by Steve Spence - one of THE best runners our country has produced, I have a pretty solid idea of how to build myself back up ... slowly.

I've been running now about 3 or 4 times a week - around 3-5 miles each time. Today I did some hills and man did it feel good. Correction: it hurt so good. The only time I actually enjoy pain is during running. I did a loop at a playground ... and took a few quick Instagram snap shots.

Thinking Spring ... Gardening

Nothing "beets" walking to your garden, picking fresh veggies or berries, cleaning them off and eating them for dinner 40 minutes later. That's as fresh as you can get at meal time.

For the past few years, we've had a "garden". I call it our "ghetto garden". It's not raised, but it's surrounded by a foot-high, white picket fence - which was meant to keep the critters out, but failed to do so last year and though we planted MANY carrots - we were able to sample a whopping ZERO.

This year, I'd love to start the growing season off with a raised garden area, though I'm a bit intimidated as I have never attempted this before and don't know where to begin.

I love these raised gardens from Scout Regalia . They're clean, neat, and seem to be high quality. These cedar raised gardens are also spectacular. Unique Home and Garden seems to have great tips!

Winter Blues

Ahhh... good old winter and it's eagerness to impart illness upon us all. This past week my kids have been getting it all. We've spent a week running to the doctors, pharmacies, doing lots of eucalyptus showers ( I put a drop or two of eucalyptus oil on the shower floor while the kids shower ), extra fluids, and resting.

We've had lots of cranky outbursts and early naps or bed times to rest up... a few canceled Tae Kwon Do classes, or missed school days. It's continuing into the weekend, so I'm hoping this extra day of rest on Monday will do everyone some good.

Hope your family is avoiding the germies and staying healthy ... illnesses sure aren't fun with kiddo's :-) But I do love the extra snuggles.

Dinner Time Chimes

Here's a brief interview with Dinner Time Chimes:

1. Is this a business or hobby?

Dinner Time Chimes is a business, but since it's a second job for me it's been on the backburner for the past few months as we welcomed our LittleDude to the family. We're still trying to figure out how we're going to raise a kid AND find time to be creative too!

2. What's your favorite material to work with? Why?

My favorite material is silverware... go figure! I'm always amazed at the different patterns on the handles of the silverware. I love when a customer spots a pattern that they recognize as being their grandmothers. I also enjoy the chance to daydream about why some of the things were engraved onto the handles. I recently made fork easels from forks that said "Maryland Penitentiary," "Famous," and "President"...apparently EVERYone used silver plate at some point in history.

3. What's the newest item/product you're working on?

I recently bought a Silhouette machine, so I'm working on revamping thrift store finds with vinyl. It's a much quicker craft, which is exactly what I need these days since polishing silverware is messy and not the easiest task when watching a six month old too!

Homemade Pasta

This is something I can say I've done once ... and probably won't do this again - though it is YUMMY! It was a solid 3 hour process.

You'll need the following:

2 C Flour ( I used unbleached )
1/3 C water
2 eggs
1 tsp olive oil
touch of sea salt

1. Create crater on counter with flour.
2. Mix wet ingredients and salt together
3. Pour wet ingredients into crater.
4. Gradually mix in the flour into the wet ingredients until fully mixed.
5. Kneed dough for about 10 minutes.
6. Roll dough as thin as possible.
7. Add in the filling (use your favorite recipes/ingredients), or cut it into thin strips using a pasta cutter (or pizza cutter) to make spaghetti.
8. Use a fork to seal the edges of the ravioli.

Face Care Routine - How To ...

I get a few questions here and there about what to use on your face ... and when? Should you use a toner first, or facial soap? What about a scrub, or mask - when or how often?

This is my general face care routine:

# 1 : Facial Mask - approximately once or twice a week. Sea Clay or Mask No. 7 or Chocolate Facial
OR
# 1: Face Exfoliator - approximately twice per week. Black Walnut Face Scrub is divine!

After either the exfoliator or the mask, I will rinse well with warm water (never hot water).

#2: Facial Soap - Eco-Logic offers two natural facial soaps. Facial Soap No. 7 and our classic Tea Squared soap with green tea and tea tree.

#3: Natural Face Toner - Eco-Logic offers a few different types of toners. Rose and peppermint for sensitive skin. Normal to oily facial toner with lavender, tea tree, and eucalyptus oils blended with glycerin, aloe and witch hazel extracts. For than man - a natural aftershave with lots of infused herbs, botanical extracts, and essential oils.

#4: Daily Facial Moisturizer - When I'm having one of those 'more oily than usual days', I use the botanical packed Pore Tonic. During my 'normal' days, I use Harmony - with squalane oil and infused oils.

#5: Nightly Moisturizers - Night Serum packed with loads of vitamin e, myrrh, sandalwood and infused herbs . This is sure to pack a HUGE nutritional punch! Evening Eye Cream: Super fluffy and nutrient rich cream with sal butter, aloe, evening primrose, and rose extracts.

I hope this helps give a clear view of what products can be used when ... and in what order. Now - off to enjoy some Evening Eye Cream ... and some shut eye!

Handmade Business Income and Expense Tracker

This year, I've made a vow to keep track (thoroughly) of my income/expenditures, so that I'm not scrambling at the end of the year to throw it all together.

I have put together an excel spread sheet that I'll be using each night to enter in incoming payments and expenses. I'll be doing this each night before I go to bed, so that after 365 days of money coming in, and going out, I'll be able to have a clear picture of my business. This is a fabulous tool, also to help budget and plan for up-coming expenses. Just input the amount of money you'd need to spend in June on a show, or in August for supplies. This will give you a good idea of what you'll have to earn, to make that possible.

You can of course, change the column headings to suit your business.

If you need to create space (as I have already done in between Jan-1 and Jan-2) simply use the 'Add Row' feature in Excel. This will create 'black' cells on the far right in the " Yearly Total " column. You will have to double click the first blank cell and add in the correct missing column, then drag the change the entire way down the "Yearly Total" column.

With two little ones and a business, it sure is difficult to make that time - when they're sleeping is best for me. I go for a run .. and then get into a little yoga, and then I'm ready for my hot cup of coffee!

Baby Keiren

A friend from high school's little 4 mo. old baby boy has been through so much this past week. He had surgery for a severe cancerous brain tumor, that is potentially fatal, and has been given a 20% chance of survival. He'll be continuing to fight this disease through chemotherapy treatments at home with is family. He and his parents are fighting for a miracle and are doing everything they can to see their son grow into a handsome, strong, playful boy.

However, medical bills are extremely expensive and the family just has so much to manage. The community has really been coming together, offering donations and meals, but there's so much more room for help. This lightly floral, minty soap was made with natural peppermint essential oil (grown and distilled in the USA), and a gorgeous rose absolute blend, added to Eco-Logic's unique, vegan soap formulation. A touch of sea clay adds a light green color to the bottom of the bar, and real, dried rose buds to top it off.

Lotions, Body Butters, Sticks ... Oh My !

With the numerous types of moisturizers out there it can be difficult to determine (especially over the internet) what product will be best for you. What will each of these products feel like, what will their consistency be, and the #1 question I receive: will they be greasy?

I'm here to give you the breakdown:

100% Natural Moisturizers - products like these include:

facial serums, elixirs, massage oils, natural body butters, body oils, and solid lotion sticks (or bars).

These products contain 100% natural oils. There will be no water (and thus, no preservative) present. This means that a very small amount of the product will go a very long way. With these items you get the most bang for your buck. Use too much - and they WILL be greasy. While they are all formulated to penetrate the skin quickly, if you use to much at once, it will initially feel greasy. One swipe of the lotion stick or one drop of your favorite facial serum is all you need. It will quickly sink in and you'll still be left with OODLES of product in your bottle. (I've been using the product pictured above after my shower and before bed every day for two weeks and still haven't used more than 25% of the bottle).

Natural Lotions - Most consumers favor this type of moisturizer. Why? Most likely because it's what they're used to. It's generally the type of moisturizer that is found at most stores. It's non-greasy, easy to apply, and while it has that 'consumer feel', it's still natural! Natural lotions incorporate some sort of natural butter and oil formulation, emulsified. This means, it's evenly distributed and suspended within water (or some other liquid: aloe, etc..). When you spread lotions on your skin, the emulsified concoction allows the oils to go on light, and evenly distributes on your skin. This leaves you with a very light layer of moisturizing ingredients. While most people LOVE lotions, they do not give you the most bang for your buck, ingredient-wise. The thicker the lotion (generally) the more skin-loving goodies are contained in the mixture. If you're wondering about the lotion's 'feel' and thickness, email the formulator!

Natural Body Butters - A body butter is generally a bit thicker than a lotion, and contain more oils/butters than a bottled lotion. Some come whipped and are light and fluffy. Eco-Logic's are whipped, but are VERY thick. The percentage of solid butters to water and liquid oils will determine the formulations consistency. With natural body butters - a little goes a long way. Most body butters are emulsified (water and oil/butter mixed). If they are water-free, they will say 100% natural (see above description). Body butters are fantastic to use on extra dry skin, or skin patches. I use them on my kids after a lot of swimming, or outdoor play. Depending on the consistency of the body butter, they 'can' be greasy if you use too much at once ... but generally are not since they are emulsified. Many people have preferences with consistencies of products - when in doubt, ask the formulator! They will LOVE to product-talk with you!

Natural Soap Does Lather!

So many people hear 'natural soap' and get the notion that they won't get a good lather. For some, this thought is a turn off immediately from natural soaps. For those that feel this way - I have GOOD news! That is a totally false statement - natural soap DOES lather well. That is ... when it's formulated to do so.

When a soaper makes his or her creations, they incorporate oils into their recipe for specific purposes. Some oils are lighter, and add a more creamy lather. Some oils harden the bar and provide ample lather. By looking at the ingredient list, it can be difficult to determine the bar's lathering abilities. A few vegan oils that provide ample amounts of the bubbly: Castor, Coconut, Palm Kernel. These are the most common used.

When in doubt - email the formulator and ask of the soap's lathering capabilities. I carry some soaps that later better than others. For the most part, I do add enough oils to each bar to create a lather explosion! But - when in doubt - ask!

You Get What You Pay For ...

You are running through the grocery store and you forget you need some moisturizer. You head down the isle and grab a $3, 18 oz bottle of a big-brand lotion. You feel good about your bargain and that you've perhaps saved some money. So - what DO you get for your savings?

You will receive an 18 oz bottle containing mostly water. What else is in there? ... quite frankly, mostly chemicals. Initially, when you jump out of the shower and slather it on you, it might feel moisturized. As the day goes on, your skin will feel dry. If you have any skin sensitivities or skin issues, a $3 bottle of lotion is something you will not want anywhere near you. This will cause so many more issues. I have so many people asking what they should use on their skin - that it's continuously dry and itchy. They tell me their doctor suggested a big brand lotion ... a $3, 18 oz bottle.

On the other hand, when you buy a moisturizer, that's been formulated from scratch, to include specific natural ingredients loaded with essential vitamins, that have been used for centuries to make the skin smooth, supple, you're making a solid purchase. With natural, well made moisturizers, you do not need a lot of it. A small lotion will last you just as long as your $3 large bottle. You'll only need your natural lotion once a day. It will quickly absorb, and get to work on your extra dry patches. Loaded with vitamins, you're literally feeding your skin with what it needs to stay healthy.

So ... next time you're plagued with extra dry skin (from chlorine in the summer, or heating elements in the winter), before you quickly reach for that $3 lotion, take a look at the ingredients and see what's in it - will it really moisturize? A cheap product isn't worth $3 if it makes the problem worse.

that's what I looked like when I saw the size of these soaps - yes, they really ARE gigantic and weigh in at 10+ to 12 ounces! You can easily get 2 very large bars or 3 smaller bars from each of these behemoths from krugsecologic!
As soon as I opened my mailbox door I could smell mint and patchouli, the fragrances are so intense. And these are gorgeous soaps as well, carefully packaged and labeled.

Lemons

Lemons are so versatile... there are hundreds of uses for them. Here are a few of my favorites:

1. half of a lemon - throw some baking soda in the sink and use the lemon to scrub the sink (can do the same thing with the toilet as well).

2. flavor water ... yum !

3. Add some to your homemade floor scrub recipe.

4. Use some lemon essential oil in a water/vinegar mix in a spray bottle and use as an air freshner.

5. Flavor food (especially salad or pasta) - YUMMMM !

6. A squirt of lemon juice with a touch of olive oil to polish furniture.

Matty's Soap

If you have been a fan of Eco-Logic's in the past, you know that we've had Matty's Soap for sale. All the monies collected previously had gone to an Autism charity in little Matty's name. This time around, however, I'd love to donate the money directly TO little Matty for his new therapy/treatments.

Recently, he's begun to undergo a newer, natural/holistic form of treatment. He and his family eat only organic foods, take pure vitamins, use natural skin care products, and try (as much as humanly possible) to eliminate toxins from their home.

Since he's begun this type of treatment, he's been saying and repeating words, following directions, and using picture communications with minimal prompts. With toxins eliminated, he can work at his best!

Mommy and Daddy are SO very happy at his progress. Unfortunately, the treatments/therapy are very costly and not covered by insurance. Eco-Logic would LOVE to help in any way possible so Matty can continue to progress.

Your Nose Knows ...

Have you ever walked into a bath and body store, candle store ... or down the laundry detergent isle and you feel like your nose is working overtime? I don't know about you, but I get a serious headache from the overload of chemicals and synthetic fragrances. This is something I may not have been totally cognisant of previously, or dismissed as something else.

The only time in the past that I did notice how strong the odors were is right after a run. Having run competitively, I trained every single day. Every day I'd hop in the shower after a run and immediately shampoo my hair. I'd literally have to hold my breath while I shampooed my hair because my senses were so highly 'activated' at the time. The synthetic scents would BURN my nose - it was awful. How that wasn't an indication to me at the time that those chemicals were bad for me, is totally beyond me.

Now, having removed myself as much as humanly possibly from items synthetically fragranced or any super-chemically laden products, I can immediately tell when something is not fragranced naturally.

My children even notice it now as we walk down the laundry isle in the grocery store. They both cover their noses and say "ewww... this hurts Mom, can we go in the next isle". We can't even step foot into any 'bath and body' type store. It really gives us all headaches. It's amazing what your body becomes accustomed to, and perhaps then you just don't notice the damage that's being done on a daily basis. Once you remove yourself from that factor and your body 'readjusts', you immediately sense the body signals (headaches, burning nose, etc..) that what you're around is NOT healthy.

I used to love perfumes ... I recall as a teenager applying my 'exclamation' perfume daily, my Aussie hairspray, and numerous other products my nose wouldn't be able to handle any longer. Now that I'm around only naturally scented products, it's such a relief to my head (and nose).

I have tried other handmade natural and vegan soaps, but yours are the best! And I've finally convinced my hubby that store-bought soap just isn't good for his skin, so I'll need to buy some soon for him.

I've decided recently that I want to buy only handmade, natural shampoo too. I have thick hair with a bit if a wave to it, and with gray shimmers and streaks. This past week, I ran a 'create a new blend' contest. There have been SO many fabulous suggestions. After blending all of them, and having a large amount of help in selecting the winner - hands-down, the favorite was the Mojito blend - lime and spearmint.

This poses a slight problem, since one contestant suggested "Mojito" (using lime and peppermint), and one contestant suggested 'lime and spearmint'. Traditionally, Mojito's are made with spearmint. What Are You Getting, When You Buy Handmade?

Many people love supporting small business. You can see your purchase directly benefiting the family involved. Your money stays, usually within your community, or helps to further support another small business.

Handmade is an even smaller niche of the small business portion of our economy. So ... why purchase handmade? What makes something handmade (genuinely hand-made), much more beneficial to you and your family?

Many large companies hire employees at much lower wages, to grow the company in order to financially ameliorate themselves. Far to0 frequently lately, are we seeing CEO's and Presidents of major corporations taking jets, lavish vacations, and purchasing multiple properties while their employees work overtime 'off the books', go without healthcare benefits, and can barely support their families. Small businesses (particularly handmade, in my opinion) are so connected to their product and are so passionate about what they've created, they take great care in all aspects of their business, and want to see their employees cared for, and happy. These owners are invested more spiritually, and deeply in their company than those of major corporations.

What about the product itself? Handmade materials and ingredients are not decided upon by someone far removed from the company, nor are they selected by a board of directors invested in the company solely through their wallets, instead of their hearts. Each decision about the company, from the ingredients and materials, to the tags, labels, logo, mission - EVERYTHING - is decided by the owner. Each item put into the product is chosen to somehow directly benefit the consumer.

The owner and employees, can often develop relationships with their customers. They know what each customer likes, and can then suggest other products or items they might also enjoy. Handmade owners take great pride in developing relationship with their customers - they are, of course, sharing their true passion with them. To the owner of a handmade business, it becomes much more than just selling a product ... it becomes sharing what's important to them with others.

It is for these reasons, you get heart and soul in each and every handmade item you purchase. Your handmade purchase is just as much an investment in the human connection as it is in the actual product.

Do you LOVE your black eye-liner like I do? It can really hang on your eyes, and can be difficult to remove nightly.

There's no need for expensive make-up remover. Most eye shadows and minerals can be dissolved in oil. What I do is get a cotton ball or Q-tip and dip it in Eco-Logic Facial Liquor. If you don't own Facial Liquor, no worries ... just use a touch of olive oil. It's super-inexpensive, and easy.

Natural Product Care

So you've recently ordered some natural skin care products - maybe it's not Eco-Logic ... that's ok, I won't hold it against you ;-) It is said that the very best products to put on your skin should contain ingredients you could possible put in your mouth (I'm not at all advocating you eat ANY natural skin care products). This means, ingredients such as olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oils are fabulous ingredients to cook with, AND to put on your skin.

BUT ... you do have to store your products carefully just as you would your oils from the store - particularly during the hot summer months, or if you live in a consistently hot climate. REAL natural products (not the ones labeled as such with mostly synthetic ingredients) need to be treated as you might treat your groceries. When you go to the grocery store and purchase a large order during the summer - most likely, you'll want to run home quickly and put them in the refrigerator or in your cooler home. Think about the olive oil you purchase in the baking isle at the store - it needs to be kept (ideally) in a dark, cool cabinet.

If your skin care products are genuinely natural, most likely they will contain oils you can find on your grocer's shelves - olive, grape seed, safflower, soybean coconut, etc. This means in order to keep them from becoming rancid (spoiling - otherwise known as the oxidation and degradation of vitamins within the oils) they need to be kept in a cool, and relatively dark environment. Most natural formulators will include oils containing loads of antioxidants such as natural Vitamin E, or Rosemary Oil Extract to help protect the natural oils from early oxidation. However, this is not a 'fool-proof' system. The user has to also take special care to ensure the quality and life span of their natural products.

There are some other tips and pointers on extending the life of your natural products. Eco-Logic sends a "Natural Product Care & Instruction" sheet along with each order to ensure each customer will receive full use of their product.

I just had to share this super-fresh, yummy, veggie lunch I made the other day. These are just items I had in my fridge .. and I'm sure you could use lots of different vegetables.

I sauteed eggplant slices, and portabella mushrooms, and sliced up some tomatoes and fresh mozzarella balls.

I stacked them all on top of little slices of a baggette, and topped it with a fresh basil leaf.

For a fresh beverage, I used some filtered water, squeezed in a little lemon, added some mint leaves, and stevia for sweetness.

Super yummy, and fresh - GREAT summer dish!

My Small Business - My 3rd (and 4th) Child

I knew when I started my business it'd be a lot of work. And it sure is ... a LOT of work. A LOT. (Did I say a lot?)

But what I didn't realize is that it would be like having another child ... or two or three additional children :-)

There are so many similarities to motherhood and operating (and growing) your small business:

1. Pregnancy - the gestational time to birth an actual human child is nine months. You are always tired, are uncomfortable, and still must operate through your regular daily work schedule. You are growing an actual human - incredibly tiring, but a mother's work begins there. You try to eat the best foods for baby, so as to give he/she the very best start possible.

As you are laying the foundation for your business, you are laying out your products/services, policies, paperwork, and all the legal details to ensure your business has the best chance at success. You want to hit the ground running, with a cohesive company providing the best product or service you can. The development of my business took longer than the natural gestational period for a human baby ... and I'm pretty sure I didn't get as much rest as I did when I was ACTUALLY pregnant :-)

2. Bringing Home Baby - oh those sleepless, sleepless nights. While I'm glad both of my children are out of that phase now for a good two years, I do have my third and fourth child (my business) that often causes me to lose lots of sleep at night. I find myself packaging orders, wrapping soaps, answering customers, and making soaps into the wee hours of the morning. When my REAL children have their 'down times', is when my business-baby gets it's attention - leaving very little time (if any) for Mama.

3. A Mom's Work Is Never Done - Just as a mother is continuously doing something to help her children (laundry, dishes, playing, reading, feeding, teaching, taxi-cabbing, etc..), the small business owner (particularly if your business is in your home) always has something to do. It is NOT a typical 9-5 job. If you're working hard to grow your business, you're trying to keep up with the business you have, and continue to create new products/services or expand, and be noticed by other potential customers.

4. Babies Aren't Free - If you're a mother, you know that preparing for baby takes a lot of cash! There are cribs, car seats, strollers, diapers, wipes, clothes, bath tubs ... and as baby grows they just become more expensive. Creating your business from scratch takes a pretty penny - each business differs in how that money is spent. The saying "to make money, you have to spend it", is very true. Very few businesses can start on a 'zero-down' policy.

Though ... with all the work and sleepless nights, just as we find ourselves feeling with motherhood, we love our babies and it's worth every single second. Our businesses are our creations (from start to finish), and everything we do with them molds them into the companies we want them to become.

Blair County Arts Festival

This past weekend I traveled North to the Blair County Arts Festival in Altoona, Pa (at the Penn State Altoona campus). This is my second year at the festival and I'll definitely be doing it again.

I love seeing so many familiar faces, visiting with friends and family, and meeting other artists. I thoroughly enjoyed the frequent 'high school reunions' in my tent and getting to meet everyone's significant others and their children.

The BCAF had bands playing (Chris Vipond and the Stanley Street Band rocked as usual ) and lots of REALLY good food ( my favorite being the crepe stand - my lunch and dinner was a grilled veggie crepe and a dessert crepe with Nutella). The roasted pecans were absolutely out of this WORLD ! BCAF also had a HUGE children's activity area with face painting, sand art, charactatures, costumed characters and more!

The weather was absolutely gorgeous both days. I was fortunate enough to have my best friend help me at the stand and my parents entertain the kiddos.

Thank you immensely to those that stopped by to say hello and smell the goodies! I am excited for next year already!

Falafel - LUNCH !

Super tasty, and EASY lunch today !! I wanted some pita bread, but since I didn't have it I just used a slice of 100% whole wheat. On top of the bread, I put some sliced, fresh tomatoes - seasoned with salt, pepper, and thyme. I then added some plain yogurt, lettuce, and of course, falafel. YUM !

This lunch was about 350 calories, and very filling. Topped off with an iced coffee to combat the hot day we're having. EXCELLENT !

Road Trip - Angels and Airwaves

This past Thursday and Friday, my best friend and I traveled to Rochester, NY to see our all-time favorite band, Angels and Airwaves. We love Blink 182, Box Car Racer ... and of course, Angels and Airwaves. We have already been to countless Angels and Airwaves shows, and a minimum of 6 combined Blink 182 shows. What we love most about Angels and Airwaves is the meaning/feeling behind their songs. Every one is from the heart and really reflects on life, love, and true happiness. Their newest album "LOVE" does not disappoint.

We got VIP tickets to the Rochester show and were NOT disappointed. We got SUPER early admission and got to sit ON stage (this was the exact sound check we attended) while the band (lead by Tom Delonge) did their sound check. It was so amazing getting to sit two feet away from Tom while he sang my favorite songs. He sang my friend a quick 'Happy Birthday' song, too!

After the sound check we were lucky enough to get a few guitar picks he's used with a big 'AVA' (the Angels and Airwaves acronym they use). We waited off stage and all the members of the band: Matt, Atom, David, and Tom all came around and chatted, signed, and took some awesome pictures. Everyone got a free CD, poster and t-shirt (signed as they walked around).

Matt, Atom, Tom, and David were all very kind and gave each fan so much attention. It's an experience I will never ever forget. We were also allowed early entrance to the actual show, allowing us a front row spot directly in front of Tom.

Local Farmer's Market

This past weekend we enjoyed a lovely trip down the road to the local farmer's market (York Markets). It was our first trip to this one and it was awesome!

They had so many different selections - lots of fruits and veggies, greek foods (gyros, sandwiches, stuffed grape leaves, and desserts), coffee houses, loads of handmade shops. They even had a nice area to sit and eat lunch or breakfast and listen to the musicians sing and play their guitars. FUN!

We will definitely be back for more!!

This picture was my effort in trying to get a good shot of some of the vendor's booths. After looking at the picture on my iPhone I noticed my daughter was licking the window of the greek food's refrigeration case. It WAS good food :-)

Whole Wheat Dessert

I wanted to share a YUMMY dessert I made today - whole wheat pound cake. On top of that, I put some sliced, fresh strawberries and vanilla ice cream. I'm normally not an ice cream fan ... but this was so good!

I definitely can taste a difference between pound cake (or any other recipe for that matter) with bleached/enriched flower and whole wheat. But, it's not 'bad' .... just different. I would much rather feed my children a whole wheat dessert, than one that's been super-ultra refined and processed. The slight change in taste is totally worth it to me! I used a simple Betty Crocker recipe and it was very easy. It did take about 70 minutes in the oven - but definitely worth the wait!

Employee of the Month - MOM !!

You just start to make dinner and hear, "Moooommmm... Ma... Mommy... MOMMY !!!" - You walk over to your children fighting over a toy, and for the 25th time today calmly settle a minor dispute. You continue making dinner. "Mooooommmm... I just went potty ... I need HELP"! You help the child on the potty, wash hands, dry hands, and head back to making dinner. "Have you finished your homework", you ask for what seems like the third time in the past ten minutes. You stop cooking to set your oldest child up at the table to start homework, and the other child wants to do what the older sibling is - so you run to get notebooks, crayons, and pencils so she doesn't feel left out. You again, go back to making dinner. "Mom, can you help me with this homework"? You take ten minutes to go over the homework directions. You look over at your youngest, only to find she's dumped the crayons all over the floor and is now off to dumping her clothes out of her dresser to put a new outfit on. You go help her clean that up, and then start on the crayons. Finally everything is picked up and you see her digging through your tupperware cabinet, and realize you still haven't fully helped the oldest out with his homework. You go back to that task, and eventually resume making dinner. It takes you 10 times as long to make a simple dinner than it really should. Sound familiar?

Moms have such a tough job - we work tirelessly for our children, with sometimes very little sleep, no paycheck, no raise, no promotions, and no awards/recognition for our hard work.

The Office - What's Your Take?

Usually I use my blog to share little tid-bits of my life, show off some of my fabulous creations, or learn about others' views and opinions.

This time I'd like to take a quick minute and reflect on a great love of mine - The Office ;-)

If you know me well, you'll know my favorite character is Dwight Schrute (of course). Who doesn't love "Bears, Beets, Battlestar Galactica" ? His mannerisms, viewpoints as a farmer, and his need to be continuously in control is just so amusing.

And Jim - his look to the camera just says it ALL !

I have to say I'm VERY disappointed in the current episodes, and am contemplating not even bothering to watch the new ones anymore. Of course, I'll never quit watching the endless supply of re-runs I have DVR'ed - as I laugh every time even if I've seen the episode 25 times! As my good friend and I discussed, we feel that The Office really went down hill after Jim and Pam got married. The entire dynamic completely changed. There was no 'tension' anymore. Jim became more serious with his work, and less apt to annoy Dwight. Once Jim was put in charge (as co-manager with Michael Scott), he was to enforce rules ... not break them. So un-funny :-)

Overall, I think the cast is 'over-acting', and the writing doesn't seem quite as funny as previous episodes.

What's your take, fellow Office followers? Will you continue following? Do you think The Office will recover from this slump?

Shampoo Bar - Peppermint & Orange

This gorgeous sea green colored, vegan shampoo bar is formulated specifically for your hair. It contains saponified oils of jojoba, castor, olive, almond and coconut. Castor and Coconut give the bar super-lathering power. Jojoba, olive, and almond are perfect light weight oils to condition your hair. Peppermint & Orange essential oils were added to help cleanse and refresh your hair and scalp.

Why buy a shampoo bar? You do not have extra bottles to toss in the garbage or recycle, as with a commercial bottle of shampoo. You also, are not paying for excess water - as you would be with a bottle of shampoo. This bar will last you an EXTRA long time - weighing in at around 9 oz, lathers very well, and works even on super, ultra thick/wavy hair (like mine).

About twice a week, I use a vinegar/water rinse (about 2 cups water to 1/2 cup vinegar - roughly). I pour this over my hair after use and rinse of the shampoo bar. Some choose to rinse off the vinegar rinse, some leave in. I choose to rinse it off. When rinsed well, your hair will not smell like vinegar at all and will feel very soft and manageable.
