This year, I've made a vow to keep track (thoroughly) of my income/expenditures, so that I'm not scrambling at the end of the year to throw it all together.
I have put together an excel spread sheet that I'll be using each night to enter in incoming payments and expenses. I'll be doing this each night before I go to bed, so that after 365 days of money coming in, and going out, I'll be able to have a clear picture of my business. This is a fabulous tool, also to help budget and plan for up-coming expenses. Just input the amount of money you'd need to spend in June on a show, or in August for supplies. This will give you a good idea of what you'll have to earn, to make that possible.
You can of course, change the column headings to suit your business.
If you need to create space (as I have already done in between Jan-1 and Jan-2) simply use the 'Add Row' feature in Excel. This will create 'black' cells on the far right in the " Yearly Total " column. You will have to double click the first blank cell and add in the correct missing column, then drag the change the entire way down the "Yearly Total" column.

This is a very good approach. I used to use an excel sheet to track income and expenses. Now due to growth, I have started using quickbooks.
I'm a doofus. How do you download this? I'm on a mac.
JJ --- I'm on a mac too :-) Click on the words in the post above that says 'excel spread sheet'. When you get to the google doc, look to the far left and you'll see "File" - click that and then 'download'.
